A multi-generation machine that performs a basic space travel simulation. Somehow, she managed to hang on through all these years.
The original concept of this work was created in March 2018, and was animated with original music in March 2021. This piece is dear to my heart as it was the first to be part of the "Lost Relic" series, and inspired the following works, including Coexist. The title is a pun about one of my favorite video games, "Portal". Below is an excerpt from the original legend to capture how I felt about this work in 2018.
"I’ve always wanted to make a series of images about aging technology being retrieved by nature, but until now, I didn’t know all the right tools to do so. It feels good to have those little moments of personal breakthrough when you’ve finally accomplished something that always seemed inaccessible to you or behind a skill barrier that seems impossible to overcome. Anything is possible with practice and perseverance."
This work is part of Lost Relics, a series that explores the relationship between industry, innovation and the natural world. The future is not fixed and there are many paths to follow.
15% of the initial benefits of this series went directly to Oil Change International and the Sunrise Movement, both of which are fighting for clean, renewable energy solutions. Oil Change International is fighting government subsidies, which perpetuate the current use of oil fracturing and gas energy. The goal of the Sunrise Movement is to move to 100% renewable energy solutions over the next 10 years, and create jobs for everyone.
