"Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria whose name comes from their color (Greek: κυανός, romanized: kyanós, bed. 'blue'), hence the fact that they are also called "blue-green algae". They are found in both freshwater and terrestrial environments.
By producing and releasing oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis, it is believed that cyanobacteria are responsible for the "Great Oxygenation Event" that has made the lives of most organisms on Earth today possible. But cyanobacteria can also produce a series of toxins (known as cyanotoxins) that can be deadly to humans and animals.
It was this ambivalence of cyanobacteria that struck me in the first place ; I was fascinated by their ability to promote life or cause death, which is why I produced these images".
