Waref Abu Quba

Germany

Waref Abu Quba is a Syrian-German filmmaker and animator based in Germany, with over 15 years of experience. Trained as a graphic designer after earning a bachelor’s degree in art from Damascus University, he now handles every stage of filmmaking—from directing and shooting to postproduction. His artistic practice often centers on transforming patterns into dynamic visual experiences. For example, he turns ornate domes into hypnotic, spinning compositions and reimagines traditional rugs as enchanted scenes where patterns sway or collapse, creating a playful dialogue between order and chaos. His work is marked by a joyful, whimsical quality that invites viewers to rediscover familiar artifacts with fresh eyes, merging traditional craftsmanship with modern digital art.

Waref has built an impressive career working with renowned brands such as Mastercard, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. His films have earned international recognition, with nominations at festivals including the Arab Film Festival (2016) and the Cape Town & Winelands International Film Festival (2025), as well as a Best Film award at the Zebra Poetry Film Festival (2019). His work has been featured in media outlets like The Atlantic, PBS, and i24News, among others.
