YOSHI SODEOKA

Yoshi Sodeoka is a Japanese born artist and musician who has been producing art projects since the early 1990s. In 1989, he moved to New York City to study art and design at the Pratt Institute and has lived there ever since. His work is characterized by its neo-psychedelic aesthetic and its exploration of multiple media and platforms. Primarily consisting of video, GIFs and print, his practice also simultaneously inhabits the worlds of fine art, music, publishing and advertising. His work has been exhibited internationally (Centre Pompidou, Tate Britain, Museum of Modern Art, La Gaîté lyrique, Baltimore Museum of Art, Sonar Festival…).

Yoshi has also given numerous lectures on the subject of digital art and design and has been a member of the jury of the Webby Award, the Art Director’s Club, the One Club, the Society of Publication Designers and the MOV festival organized by Shift Japan. He was the founding art director of Word Magazine, one of the longest running (1995) and most influential electronic web magazines. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of the Moving Image in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.

FORAYS INTO CLAMOR

Many of the prototype electronic computers developed to date have been built using neurons. Unlike the classic “all-or-nothing” binary configuration used in computer science, neurons are capable of switching between thousands of states, which means that “wetware” computers have the potential to be much more dynamic and self-organizing than conventional computers. Yoshi’s fascination with the self-organizing computer led him to experiment with audiovisual feedback loops. The videos in the Wetware collection developed from a few seeds of graphic and audio information that were animated and then transformed by automatic video feedback. The resulting visuals are generated by this feedback. This feedback continues to generate forever, unless it is told to stop. Like evolutionary processes in nature, the result is often unpredictable and difficult to control.
