ALEX MCLEOD
Alex McLeod is a Toronto-based visual artist who creates works about interconnectedness, life cycles, and empathy. He uses the computer as his medium of expression and is inspired by the media and the mechanisms of social networks. He also likes to work on the themes of the built environment, adaptation, life, death, and the invisible space in between. From all this, he creates technically sophisticated 3D environments that serve as backdrops for advertising campaigns as well as cinematic narratives for music videos. He sees his prints, animations, and sculptures as gateways to alternative dimensions, oscillating between the real and the imaginary.

Alex holds a BFA in Fine Art from the Ontario College of Art and Design and an MFA in Digital Media from the Yeates School of Graduate Studies at Ryerson University in Toronto. His work is held in private and public collections around the world. His work has been exhibited around the world, from Toronto to Vancouver, Vienna, Miami, and many others.

WONDERLAND

I wanted to take the associations I have with French cheese, and abstract them. These works will be presented in the form of a multi-channel video display, consisting of 5 screens showing short looped videos of varying lengths. The elements melt, stretch, roll and reform, giving the impression at times that they exist in a world close to our own, but very different. Each of the 5 videos will be independent but will be able to speak to each other through their speed, palette, and textures. “Wonderland” is a psychological tribute to cheese.

fantasy splendor
Secret and Fantasy are mirror images of themselves in different universes. I think of these as either abstracted giant wheels of cheese or molecular level, micro / macro.

anticipated adventure
The two sculptures obviously speak about elevation and supernatural, but they also feel like the body’s response, as if anticipated is the idea of a tongue tasting, or arrival being the neural pathways in our brain after tasting.

THE CREATION PROCESS…

about the cniel

The CNIEL was created in 1973 by cow’s milk producers and processors. It is the place where diagnoses are shared and collective actions are built in the interest of all stakeholders. The professionals of the French dairy sector work together to build common standards, particularly in the areas of dairy economics and milk quality. The CNIEL communicates and promotes the assets of the French dairy industry. It develops scientific expertise (surveys, research programs, etc.) which helps to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector’s players and to defend the image of milk and dairy products to develop demand in France and for export.
